Going Native: Planting In-Tune with Nature

Native plants and trees have many benefits including hardiness and long life. They also have very important relationships with animals, birds and insects. Learn what native plants are, what defines exotic plants, and why planting with nature is so beneficial for all of us.A Going Native: Planting In-Tune with Nature program will be held on Monday, May 17, 6 PM at the La Porte City City Park, located in the 600 block of 4th Street.

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF EASTERN IOWA TO HOST HYBRID TASTE OF ACHIEVEMENT EVENT

Junior Achievement’s annual Taste of Achievement fundraiser, presented by Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust and Community Bank & Trust, will be held on Thursday, May 27th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Epic Event Center. Join Junior Achievement for beer, wine, and food tasting that is accompanied by live music, a $1,000 cash raffle and unique raffle packages.

Card Shower to Celebrate Norval Staton's 88th Birthday

Norval Staton will be celebrating his 88th birthday, Tuesday, May 18th. Norval has spent his life working first at Iowa Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids, and as part of his retirement he's spent his time trimming trees, mowing and several odd jobs around town. Just returning home from a hospital stay a card would brighten his day, so the family would like to request a birthday card shower to cheer him and put a smile on his face.

Farewell reception to be held for Pastor Judith Bunyi

The community is invited to wish Pastor Judith well as she will be permanently moving back to her home in the Philippines. She will be greeting friends at the Gazebo at Celebration Park from 10 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.on Sunday, May 16. Judith was pastor at Wesley United Methodist Church from 2012-2016. There will be a basket for cards and good wishes.

Early Arts Study Club Monday, May 17

Early Arts Study Club will meet for Guest Day on Monday, May 17, at the Vinton Country Club at 12:00 noon.  The program will be Andrew Elwick on the History of Vinton Businesses.

Shellsburg to plant trees to help recover from Derecho Saturday May 8

The Shellsburg Area Community Group (SACG)  was awarded a grant from Trees Forever and Alliant Energy for $8,843 to plant trees.   Like so many communities, Shellsburg suffered a great loss of trees due to last year's derecho.    The stipulations of the grant required that the trees be planted in public places like parks and right of way. On May 8th, community volunteers (FFA, F-H, Firemen, Lion’s Club, SACG members) will be gathering at 8:30 in Memorial Park for a demonstration by Trees Forever staff on the proper way to plant trees.

Fundraising event to help area Woman in her battle with cancer

There will be a Silent Auction, Bingo, and Carnival Activities to raise money to help Sherry Wilmot with expenses accrued during her ongoing courageous fight with breast cancer. Her battle began in May of 2019 when she was diagnosed with multifocal, triple-positive breast cancer, a very aggressive form of cancer, and still continues. Participate by donating money, auction items or purchasing items and playing carnival games on the day of the event.

Wesley United Methodist will hold Rummage/Bake Sale Friday & Saturday May 7-8

 Wesley United Methodist will once again be hosting their Rummage / Bake sale this year. Dates are Friday May 7th, 9-3 and Saturday May 8th 9-11.  Free Will Donations will go to support our mission projects.  Items will be inside and outside, weather permitting. Masks should be worn inside the church building. We have furniture, household items, clothing, you name it!Please be aware that the intersection of 6th St.

PEO Chapter MZ News

PEO Chapter MZ will meet Monday, May 10, at 1:30  PM, at the  Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Vinton in the Fellowship Hall.  Hostess will be Nancy Beckman and Nancy Lausar will present the program.

Board Game and Puzzle Swap at Vinton Public Library May 8th

On Saturday, May 8th, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon there will be a puzzle and boar game swap held at the Vinton Public Library. Do you have board games or puzzles that you played several times in the past year? Are you ready to try some new ones? Bring them to the library and swap them for a new to you game.Only bring games and puzzles that have all of their pieces and parts.
